J. Smolonska
I am a PhD student working in the Department of Genetics at UMCG in Groningen in the Netherlands. Within the COPACETIC I am responsible for data generation and analysis. My background is in molecular biology, as I obtained my master degree in Biotechnology with this specialization at University of Wroclaw in Poland. The COPACETIC project is exciting from the very beginning and I have already learned a lot. From my perspective the COPACETIC is a group of enthusiastic people who join their forces to unravel the genetics hidden behind the COPD and I am glad to be among them. View profile |

A. E. Dijkstra
My name is Akkelies Dijkstra and I work since January 2009 as a PhD-student in the ‘Department of Pulmonary Diseases’ in the University Medical Center Groningen in Groningen, the Netherlands. My background is in Laboratory Technology and Health Sciences. Within COPD, I am particularly interested in the Chronic Bronchitis phenotype. Some COPD patients suffer from symptoms such as cough and/or mucus hypersecretion and this has a harmful effect on their lung function and their health status. The question why not every individual COPD patient complains about these symptoms fascinates me. There has to be an origin of this phenomenon, for instance a genetic background. Furthermore, I am interested in dimensions of airways of COPD patients... View profile |

F.A.A. Mohamed Hoesein, MD
As from September 1st 2009 I started working as a PhD-student at the department of Respiratory Medicine of the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands. I am interested in respiratory medicine as a whole, but I am especially interested in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). My research will focus mainly on lung function decline over time in former and current (healthy) smokers. I eventually hope that the outcomes of our research will contribute a little to decrease the (future) burden of COPD. View profile |
