Cooperation with Leuven successful.

The group of prof Decramer approached a few months ago the COPACETIC consortium with a request to act as a replication cohort. The question was whether genetic variants in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) on chromosome 15q24/25 increased the susceptibility to emphysema. As said earlier the availability of CT-derived emphysema scores can limit replication of findings and the discovery cohort of COPACETIC could perfectly function as a replication cohort. As the Belgian group also was interested in the effect on the diffusion capacity, the Utrecht part of the discovery cohort was used as replication cohort. The rs1051730 variant on 15q24/25 was tested in the Belgian and Utrecht subjects and a strong correlation between the rs1051730 A-allele and lung diffusion capacities (DLCO and KCO) / emphysema scores was observed.

The manuscript was submitted to American Journal Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and accepted for publication. The full print is available since March 2010 (Read the abstract / article on the website of the AJRCCM )
